So, I'm pretty new to New Leaf, and I am hearing a lot of talk regarding trading villagers when they start to move out. This sounds like a cool system, but I don't quite understand it.

Is this the general idea? A villager in one town starts to move, and a player from ANOTHER town swoops in and talks to the moving animal and convinces it to move into their town? Is that it?

ALSO, how do you guys go about getting animals to move? I see Isabelle has a conversation option about 'problem citizens.' Is this a way to encourage animals to leave, IS there a way to, or is it just the same old ignore-and-hope-they-leave system?

You've got the trading part right. Once the villager in question has packed up and has all their things in boxes, the player who wants to "adopt" them and speaks to them. Assuming there is a space in the town, the villager will ask to move in. Every time I've done this they've asked the first time I've spoken to them, but I'm not sure if it can take longer.

As for getting them to move, it's a bit trickier. Straight up ignoring them generally won't work. I've found the most reliable way to get them to leave involves a little bit of time travelling... Travel two days into the future, save, then travel two days back again. Someone should want to move, so just walk around town until one of the animals pings you to say they are leaving. If it's who you want, great! If not, start again. This can have consequences on grass/flowers/etc. and can take a long time, but it's pretty much accepted as the best way to get someone out.

The problem citizens thing will only change their greeting, catchphrase or shirt.

Ahhhh, gotcha. Thanks for the answer! Yeah, I'm trying to avoid any and all TTing, but I will keep that in mind!

No problem!
Without TTing you just need to occasionally speak to the villager. If you don't speak to them for a week they'll no longer ping you to tell you things, so it lowers the chances of them moving out.

Gotcha. So talk to them a little, just not a lot, and don't shower them with gifts. Got it, got it. Thanks!

Yeah! I spent nearly two weeks mostly ignoring Rory with nothing, as soon as I started talking to him once every so often he wanted to move haha.

Without time traveling, I would say a request to move can be somewhere between twice a week to once every two weeks.

Furthermore, requests to leave and errands tend to take priority at the start of your play session when you get pinged by a villager. So you can do errands first in the start of the day. Then play later in the day to try and trigger a villager moving conversation.

And sometimes other villagers bring it up in conversation. So generally if you interact with your villagers, you tend to have an idea of what is going on around your town.

Talking once or twice its good enough, I would say.

Fortunately, I don't have anyone I HATE, but there are a couple villagers I wouldn't mind losing. I'll have 7 when Cherry moves in tomorrow, so I have space, I just. I want. I want different(coughbettercough) animals.

And thanks, TRT! Helpful stuffs.

I thought I had heard somewhere that ignoring was bad in previous games, so its nice to already know its the same in NL.

It can be a lot more frequent though. I haven't time travelled recently at all but within the last few days I've had three villagers ask me to leave.

Noctua is dark and full of deer. :p

But anyways, that's actually pretty interesting. I guess you hit one side of the randomness spectrum haha.

Did someone just quote Game of Thrones in my thread?
